An Environment-First Approach to Recycling
Our mission to protect the environment is aligned to all activity at our Melbourne landfill sites. Our proximity to industrial, commercial and residential areas means we must ensure continual investment in and utilisation of ongoing dust management practices that strictly contain our environmental impact on the surrounding areas.
In order to preserve the community we live and work in, we have focussed our efforts and resources to reducing dust, pollution and fuel emissions.
By introducing new measures and key changes to our workflow process with the aim of reducing onsite dust production, we have reduced our environmental impact considerably.
We’ve accomplished this through a series of ongoing initiatives:
- Reducing traffic to our landfill by diverting up to 70% through waste sorting and recycling in a new recycling facility under construction.
- Trucks tip undercover with a covered pre-sort shed.
- Reducing internal traffic movements by 40% through centralised sealed tipping points.
- Sealing main transfer points and traffic ways to eliminate surface dust creation and sediment transfer.
- Installing internal drainage to manage and divert sediment from roadways.
- Maintaining sealed surfaces with street sweepers.
- Further minimise sediment transfer with wash bath for trucks leaving the site.
Our recycling centre location produces construction products that RMIT Life Cycle Analysis has shown to have considerably less environmental impact than the equivalent products used in the building and construction industry.
To put this into perspective, consider;
Crushed concrete is only 35% the carbon footprint of equivalent quarried stone. Not only are we recycling products and saving them from landfills, we are offering more environmentally sound solutions for building materials.

Recycling Facts
The reduced environmental impact achieved from commercial and industrial recycling can have a hugely positive impact on the planet. The recycling facts below support the ongoing need for business and community to work together to ensure a healthy and sustainable future.
- Recycling aluminum consumes 95% less energy than making aluminum from its raw materials.
- Recycling one tonne of cardboard saves 390 kWh of energy, 46 gallons of oil and 6.6 million Btus of energy.
- Australians use 1.3 million tonnes of plastic annually. The good news is that as a country, we are great recyclers. Roughly 46% of our waste is recycled each year, but that doesn’t mean we need to stop attempting to improve.
- Our Australian newspapers contain up to 40% recycled content.
- Each year, more than 6 million tonnes of rubbish is dumped into our planet’s oceans. Nearly 80% of this waste is plastic and is believed to be killing over a million seabirds and 100,000 mammals annually. When we recycle, we can help keep our oceans healthy.
- Australians send 1.9 million tonnes of paper annually to the landfill while most of this waste can be recycled. Nearly 13 trees can be saved with each tonne of paper recycled.
- We have diverted 2.5 million tonnes of concrete, brick and rock, and over 200,000 tonnes of plasterboard from landfills through recycling.
